Seems Like Yesterday We Used to Rock the Show, I Laced the Track, You Locked the Flow…Written by: Slim
On December 9th, 2011, one Brandon Dawayne Roy…that of the sweet jumper from the elbow, the lefty tear drop in the lane, the 3-point bomb at the buzzer and of course the whispering goatee retired from basketball due to a series of serious knee injuries. Just as the likes of Penny Hardaway, Tracy McGrady, and Roy’s teammate Greg Oden, injuries can suck the life out of even the best of athletes. As we blow through the first quarter of this strike shortened NBA season, fans across the nation need to remember the man that electrified arenas from Seattle down the I-5 to Portland…The Natural, BRANDON ROY.
Before we start, and by popular demand, here are a few other interesting/fun sports events that occurred on December 9th…and NO, Apolo Anton Ohno’s Bronze medal performance in the 2006 Winter Olympics 1000 meter short skate race is not one of them. Ready? Here we go:
December 9th, 1902 – American League announces purchase of grounds for a stadium in NY (Yes, Mo Rivera was the closer for the Yankees at this time as well…)
December 9th, 1933 – 21st CFL Grey Cup: Toronto Argonauts defeats Sarnia Imperials, 4-3 (No Doug Flutie was not the starting QB…great question thought)
December 9th, 1963 – Frank Sinatra, Jr. is kidnapped (Not Sports, but interesting nonetheless)
December 9th, 1973 – Bruno Sammartino beats Stan Stasiak in NY, to become WWF champ (No idea WWF was going on in 1973…but I assume Hacksaw Jim Duggan was in or around the ring….hayyooooo)
December 9th, 1984 – LA Ram Eric Dickerson rushes 215 yards for season record 2,003 yards (I still have a “See Dick Run” Poster of EDICK in my bedroom…and if the ladies are wondering, it is signed)
December 9th, 1985 – Jerry Rice begins NFL streak of 100+ consecutive game receptions (I have never done anything in my life 100 times in a row…check that, I have gone 100 straight school days with a pop tart to start the morning, muy delicioso)
December 9th, 1987 – Larry Bird, ends streak of 59 consecutive free throws (AKA…Larry Legend, The Hick from French Lick and/or Basketball Jesus…choose your poison)
December 9th, 1995 – 61st Heisman Trophy Award: Eddie George, Ohio State (He was Adrian Peterson before Adrian Peterson was Adrian Peterson)
December 9th, 2011 – Brandon Roy retires from the NBA (And just like when you liter on the ground in the middle of a peace pipe offering, one tear rolls down the cheek)
Brandon Roy leaves behind a basketball legacy that began as a Prep All-American in Seattle to an All-Everything/Pac-Ten Player of the Year career in college at the University of Washington. This 6’6, smooth shooting brotha won the 2006-2007 NBA Rookie of the Year Honors as well as played in three NBA All-Star teams. BROY was gifted on and off the court hitting game winning shots like he was Reggie vs. the Knicks as well as being a great father and citizen off the court…(think the exact opposite of Ugueth Urbina, Google him).
Alright, enough of this…everyone knows Brandon and his achievements…now let’s relive them one last time.
This tribute is one of the best I have seen…BROY, the NATURAL!
Jordan Farmar…you got to come harder than that!
I could honestly watch this ALL DAY…BROY “THE TAKE OVER” against Dallas in the 2011 NBA Playoffs:
Off into the night…BROY, you are a LEGEND!
